Ft. The Haunting of Hill House & Everything Cheddar Tomato Bacon Grilled Cheese
Happy Friday and happy Virgo season! Cheers to my Virgos, cheers to Snoop Dogg, and cheers to it (almost) being the long weekend. If this were any other year, I’d say that this week was an absolute whirlwind, but it’s 2020 and literally nothing is capable of shocking me anymore. ICYMI, the WNBA, NBA, and MLB are protesting in the wake of the Jacob Blake shooting and Hurricane Laura has been categorized as a “tropical depression.” Mood.
However you’re planning on spending your weekend, enjoy these quarantivities! And as always, please add your own activities to the list!

‘The Haunting of Hill House’
Watch this if you believe in the ~supernatural~:
Back in 2018 (that was two lifetimes ago, right?) Netflix kicked off Spooky SZN with a bang with The Haunting of Hill House. Based on Shirley Jackson’s notoriously terrifying novel of the same name, Netflix’s adaptation became an instant sensation, as people everywhere flew through all ten episodes faster than you can say Bent-Neck-Lady. If you’ve never seen this show and have no idea what I’m talking about, I won’t spoil too much. Friendly heads up though, if you prefer to actually sleep at night, you may want to skip this one.
After ghosting us for two years (ha), The Haunting of Hill House finally returned this week. Well, sort of. Netflix teased the second installment of the series on Monday and although it won’t revisit Hill House or the dysfunctional Crain family the first season centered around, it looks like The Haunting of Bly Manor will be packed with plenty of nightmare fuel to satisfy even the greatest of horror junkies. Order that night light off Amazon now, and watch (or re-watch) the Haunting of Hill House to prepare.
Stream it now via Netflix.
‘Love Island USA’
Watch this if you’re looking for love in the time of corona:
Love Island, but make it socially distanced! Love Island USA returned this week, meaning another season of sexy singles competing to find love/win a hefty cash prize while stuck on an island with no access to the outside world. What could go wrong, right?? If you’re thinking you remember me already recommending this show, you’re not 100% wrong. Love Island UK has made an appearance on Quarantivities in the past but unlike UK, we’re able to watch USA in real-time, meaning we can vote for our favorite islanders and watch all the juicy drama unfold immediately as it airs! Plus, since there’s a new episode each day and having a social life is basically a thing of the past, it’s sure to keep you occupied for at least the next month or so.
If you think about it, Love Island is basically the perfect quarantine show already. To make things even more coronavirus-friendly, though, this season’s “island” is actually just a bubble on top of The Cromwell in Las Vegas, and both the contestants and crew will be undergoing frequent COVID-19 tests/screenings throughout filming. Is the show nearly as good without the UK accents and lingo? Absolutely not. Will I watch the entire thing anyway because I literally have nothing better to do? Absolutely.
Stream it every day via CBS.
Quarant-reads
‘The Black Kids’ by Christina Hammonds Reed
Read this if you liked ‘The Hate U Give’:
Ashley Bennett was more concerned about things like how she was going to spend her summer vacation than race. That is, until the Rodney King Riots. The Black Kids centers around Bennett, a wealthy Black girl who’s forced to reexamine her own life when the four officers involved in King’s beating are acquitted, resulting in protests erupting across Los Angeles. How does she connect with her Black community when, aside from the color of her skin, she believes herself to have more in common with her white peers she grew up with? A coming-of-age novel about privilege and identity, The Black Kids is Reed’s ode to Los Angeles and a must-read.
