Ft. Ramy & Greek Chicken Bowls

Ramy

Happy Friday, everyone! It’s nearly October, so you know what that means … spooky SZN is almost upon us. Home Depot kicked things off early with what may be one of the only good things to come out of 2020 – along with Finland’s COVID-19 sniffer dogs, of course. Nasal swab <<< nasal dawg.

However you’re planning on spending your weekend, enjoy these quarantivities! And as always, please add your own activities to the list!

‘Challenger: The Final Flight’

Watch this if you wanted to be an astronaut growing up:

These days, it seems like the only thing I can count on is Netflix, who, despite all odds, has managed to continuously churn out new content throughout a global pandemic. Congrats @Netflix, I crown thee MVP of quarantine! Just last week, it added another limited docuseries to its vast content library that investigates one of the most catastrophic disasters in U.S. space exploration history.

Challenger: The Final Flight spends four episodes pairing interviews with archival video footage to explain what exactly caused the space shuttle of the same name to explode during takeoff in 1986, tragically killing all seven passengers on board (spoiler alert – NASA knew more than they let on at the time). As someone who wasn’t alive during the 80s and knew very little about the actual event aside from the tragic crash itself, I found the docuseries to be incredibly informative. If you’re a NASA nerd or are even like me and want to give your brain a break from the hours of trash reality TV you’ve been poisoning it with, try checking out Challenger this weekend. Plus, it was co-produced by J.J. Abrams which, if you ask me, is reason enough to watch alone.

Stream it via Netflix.

‘Ramy’

Watch this if you’re trying to ~find yourself~:

Honestly, I’m embarrassed that it took this show getting nominated for three Emmys for me to hear about it. Ramy follows a first-generation Egyptian-American named (you guessed it!) Ramy as he struggles to find his true ~identity~. Honestly, same. Since March alone I’ve dyed my hair three different colors, given myself bangs and contemplated moving to Paris to enroll in culinary school after watching Ratatouille.

Basically, Ramy is torn between wanting to be like any regular 20-something (aka drink, party and date) and stay true to his Muslim faith. He has pre-marital sex but draws the line at drugs and alcohol – hypocrisy both his Muslim and non-Muslim friends call him out for. Comedian Ramy Youssef created, produces and stars in the show as a man who just wants to pray hard, party hard and borrows some of the jokes from his stand-up bits (he feels bad about it, but he had a great day the day Trump banned Muslims). The result is a hilarious show with a cast as colorful as the New Jersey neighborhood it’s set in and after staying up until 4 AM bingeing it while watching it as “research” for this newsletter, I cannot recommend it enough.

Stream Seasons 1-2 via Hulu.

Quarant-reads

‘Eat A Peach’ by David Chang

Read this if noodles are life:

As a self-proclaimed ramen connoisseur, I assure you that of all the noodles in the world, Momofuku in Manhattan’s East Village serves up some of the best. Founded by David Chang in 2004, even Chang himself had his doubts when he first opened its doors. Now, with 15 restaurants and a TV series under his belt, he’s become one of the biggest names within the food world. In his memoir, Eat A Peach, Chang opens up about his success, along with the depression and anxiety he’s grappled with along the way. Calling all my fellow foodies, this one’s for you. And don’t worry – just because we’re in LA doesn’t mean we have to have major fomo, he has an LA restaurant too! Majordomo is open for pickup, so you can experience his famed food while you read about it.
