ft. ‘He’s All That’ & Garlic Butter Shrimp Boil

TGIF! It’s been a week. At least Labor Day is right around the corner, meaning we’ve almost made it to that three-day weekend. I can taste the Netflix binge now. As for this weekend, we’ve got a remake of a 90s classic starring a famous TikToker (TikTokker? TikTocker???), a shrimp boil with all the butter (because you deserve that buttery shrimp boil), and a frozen peach drink that will almost make you forget that it’s basically September (almost).

However you’re planning on spending your weekend, enjoy these quarantivities!

‘He’s All That’

Watch this if you love a good movie makeover:

From pasta recipes to laundry hacks to catchy songs, these days it seems as though I literally can’t escape TikTok. I tell myself I’m going on a TikTok cleanse, only to hear that everyone who’s anyone is talking about Alabama rush Tok, so then obviously must check it out for myself, and then suddenly it’s 3 am and I’m emotionally invested in an 18-year-old named Steph. Anyway, apparently, not even beloved 90’s romcoms are safe from TikTok’s influential clutches. He’s All That dropped on Netflix today, starring viral star Addison Rae who’s officially made the leap from dancing on your little screen to acting(?) on your big screen.

Similar to the classic He’s All That, She’s All That centers around a bet that the most popular girl in school can turn the least popular boy in school into a dreamboat worthy of dating someone who looks like Addison Rae. It does flip the gender script of the original, maybe because they tried doing the whole “put her in glasses and paint-splattered overalls” thing to Addison and she still managed to look hot. Something tells me this version might not be as great as the 1999 flick, but then again, what remake really is? And hey, if it’s really that bad at least you can just throw on OG.

‘Love Island UK’

Watch this to take that Euro vacay you had planned two summers ago from the comfort of your couch:

I’m absolutely buzzin’ — Love Island UK came to a close this week, meaning now is the perfect time for you to binge-watch all 49 episodes. (Yes, 49!) As usual, this season centered around a group of sexy UK singles in their quest to find love, go home with the cash prize, and gain thousands of Instagram followers in the process! It’s bloody brilliant!

Even if you’re not into reality TV, Love Island UK transcends genres. The accents and lingo alone are enough reasons to watch, if for nothing else than to spice up your vocab because life is just so much more fun with the phrases “cheeky banter” and “fancy a chat” in it. Don’t bother with the American version, without the accents, the show is just like another night out in LA — girls fighting over a dude named Jeremy who showed up to the bar wearing a headband and flip-flops. So, what are you waiting for? Head to Hulu and start crackin’ on!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 ¼ cups/280 grams softened unsalted butter, plus more for the pan
  • 1 cup/128 grams all-purpose flour, plus more for the pan
  • 1 packed cup/125 grams almond flour or sliced, blanched almonds
  • 1 cup/125 grams confectioners’ sugar, plus more for serving
  • 6 large eggs plus 1 egg white, at room temperature
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 ¼ cups/250 grams granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
  •  Sliced peaches, for serving
  •  Whipped crème fraîche or whipped cream, for serving

PREPARATION

  1. Heat oven to 325 degrees. Butter and lightly flour a 9- or 10-inch springform pan.
  2. Place almond flour and confectioners’ sugar in a food processor and pulse to combine. Add egg white, almond extract and 1/4 teaspoon salt, and process until it all forms a paste.
  3. Add granulated sugar to the food processor and pulse until everything is well combined and crumbly. Add butter and vanilla, and continue processing until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. With the machine running, add eggs one at a time, processing until smooth between eggs.
  4. Stop the machine, scrape down the sides with a rubber spatula, and add flour, baking powder and remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt. Pulse a few times, until the dry ingredients are just integrated. (Be careful not to overprocess.)
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake until the cake is golden on top and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 60 to 70 minutes for a 10-inch pan and 70 to 80 minutes for a 9-inch pan. Transfer the pan to a wire rack and let cake cool completely before unmolding and serving.
  6. Put the peach slices in a bowl and taste a slice. If they seem tart, sprinkle peaches with a little confectioners’ sugar.
  7. Just before serving, dust the top of the cake with confectioners’ sugar. You can serve slices of the cake with the peaches and cream on the side or dollop some whipped cream on top of the cake and top with the peaches before cutting.
